Apply for = unemployment=20 benefits on line

People who are laid = off or lose=20 their jobs can apply for unemployment insurance benefits online, = according to=20 the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

"This is a very busy = time of the=20 year as seasonal unemployment and mass layoffs reach their peak," said = Andrew=20 Penca, commissioner of the department.

"As we are in the = midst of=20 shifting from paper to electronic filing of claims, we want to make sure = that=20 claimants are aware of this. With the online application, they can apply = any=20 time they want, day or night by using any computer with internet access. = Electronic submissions actually speed up the process and result in = faster=20 service to the claimant," Penca said.

In addition to home = computers,=20 libraries and other community-based centers that offer computer access, = Work One=20 offices throughout the state have computers readily = available.

To apply, people need = their Social=20 Security number, the names and addresses of all employers for the last = two=20 years, their dates of work and the reason they left each job.

To be eligible for = unemployment=20 benefits, a worker must lose his job through no fault of their own and = must look=20 for work each week. Benefits are fully funded by employers through = unemployment=20 insurance taxes. The online application is available 24 hours a day, = seven days=20 a week at http://www.in.= gov/dwd/job_seekers/ui_to_file.html.
